Candles and Home
How do I take care of my diptyque candle?
For the first use, I recommend letting the candle burn for 2 or 3 hours, until the entire surface of the wax has become liquid, so that your candle will burn more evenly the next time. Never leave the candle burning unattended or for more than 4 hours at a time. Be sure to recenter the wick in the wax after each use. This will allow for a more even consumption of the wax, and also prevent the wick from getting too close to the glass, which could cause it to overheat. Finally, regularly trim the wick to a length of 3 to 5 mm; this will allow the candle to burn longer and prevent the wick from producing smoke or falling into the wax and making the candle unusable.
How do I choose the size of my candle?
It all depends on the size of the room you want to fragrance and the desired intensity. Different sizes are available:
- Miniature set (35g)
- Small model (70g)
- Classic model (190g)
- Les Mondes de Diptyque (270g)
- Medium model (300g)
- Large model (600g)
- Very large model (1.5kg)
- Giant model (5kg)
The small model is particularly suitable for more intimate rooms, the classic model for small and medium-sized rooms, and the large or very large models for spacious rooms and outdoor spaces. To intensify the diffusion, it is also possible to combine several candles.
How do I choose my diffusion system?
To choose the right diffusion system, it all depends on the room to be fragranced, the occasion, the desired intensity and duration, as well as the level of persistence you are looking for. To explore our different diffusion systems, click here.
What is a Scented Wax Palette?
The Wax Palette is a fragrancing object composed of an oval-shaped ceramic in Diptyque’s iconic form. It holds a scented wax pebble engraved with the name of the fragrance and diffuses a subtle, cold fragrance, ideal for intimate spaces.
What is Culbuto and how to use it?
The Culbuto is a decorative object for cold and close-range diffusion. It consists of a ceramic stick scented with Berry notes. Refillable, it can be easily assembled onto the solid wood sphere. A slight push sets its rocking motion in motion, which amplifies the diffusion of the fragrance. Learn more about the Culbuto
Can I recycle or reuse my candle jar?
In a sustainable approach, Diptyque aims to extend the lifecycle of its creations by giving them a second life and improving the recyclability of its products.
When was the first Diptyque candle created?
In 1963, the founders imagined candles inspired by the colors of their fabrics. Their wax maker suggested the idea of perfuming them, a first innovation. The chosen scents were hawthorn, cinnamon, and ... tea, a revolution in the world of perfumery. The trio celebrated the shop’s second anniversary with three candles, embodying their art of living.
This was the beginning of a wide repertoire of over fifty scents that pay tribute to nature in all simplicity by enhancing raw materials.
The glass of my candle has blackened. What can I do?
Black marks can be removed, when the candle is extinguished, using a cloth soaked in hot soapy water. Be careful not to leave any moisture on the glass or wax before lighting your candle.
Here are some usage tips to help you avoid this inconvenience:
- Regularly trim the wick to 3 to 5 mm; this will allow the candle to burn longer and prevent the wick from producing smoke or falling blackened into the liquid wax.
- Make sure to re-center the wick in the wax after each use. This will allow for a more even consumption of the wax. It will also prevent the wick from getting too close to the glass, which could cause the candle to overheat.
My candle does not burn evenly. Is this normal?
To ensure your candle burns evenly, it is essential, during the first use, to let it burn for 2 to 3 hours so that all the wax melts on the surface. Finally, it is important to avoid burning your candle in a draft and to trim the wick to 3 to 5 mm in height as well as to recenter it after each use (while the wax is still liquid).
How are Diptyque candles made?
Diptyque candles are luxury handcrafted products, and are made in France.
Noble, rare or precious, the raw materials that make up each fragrance are selected with the utmost care. Because each fragrance concentrate reacts differently to heat, meticulous care is taken to find the right balance between the concentrate, the wax, and the wick. To achieve perfect fragrance diffusion, each candle benefits from a unique blend of high-quality waxes, with a wick material and diameter selected for optimal burning.
It takes two days to make each candle and eight distinct processes, most of which are still done by hand.
How to choose a Diptyque candle?
You will find the instructions inside the product box. To choose your candle, you should ask yourself a few essential questions:
- For what type of room is this candle intended? Our candles can scent all types of rooms, as long as the lit candle is supervised. For a more generous diffusion or to scent a large space, you can play with the number of candles to burn or their sizes: petit model candle (70g), classic model candle (190g), medium model candle (300g), large model candle (600g), very large model candle (1.5 kg).
- What atmosphere are you looking to create? Are you looking for a scent that evokes nature? A scent that invites you to travel? Through its wide collection of scented candles, Diptyque enhances and reveals the olfactory treasures found in nature: woody, floral, spicy, fruity, herbal. Today, Diptyque offers nearly 50 scents.
You can also create a unique scent by combining two scents of your choice to invent an atmosphere that is your own. In fact, as early as 1963, the founders of Diptyque enjoyed creating unique atmospheres by combining two candles. Blending their scents offers an infinite palette of memories to recreate, emotions to rediscover, journeys to imagine. You will find usage suggestions to fully enjoy your Diptyque candle in the section The Art of Scenting Your Home and The Art of Wax.

How should I clean a candle jar after use?
When 5 mm of wax remain or the metal wick holder is visible, it is time to give your candle a second life.
Step 1 After the last use, it is recommended to let the candle cool down completely so that the wax solidifies and the glass returns to its normal temperature.
Step 2 To remove the wax: - Place the candle in a heat-resistant bowl, itself placed in a sink - Pour water at about 60°C up to halfway, making sure not to get any inside the candle - Let it sit for two minutes before taking out the jar by holding it from the top
Step 3 The wax can then be easily removed by sliding a rounded blade between the wax and the side of the glass. The jar can then be washed by hand with a non-abrasive sponge and La Droguerie dishwashing liquid or in the dishwasher.
Perfumes
What is the difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?
Eau de parfum is not simply an eau de toilette with a higher concentration. It is another interpretation of the olfactory story, more intense, for which the creator (the nose) has emphasized a particular characteristic through new ingredients or a new accord, while remaining true to the original story.
Do Son eau de toilette, for example, evokes the fresh and intoxicating scent of a tuberose carried by the sea breeze of Ha Long Bay. The eau de parfum, on the other hand, is an interpretation of the flower at nightfall in a wooden pagoda. The tuberose is more lingering, with a woodier note.
Are Diptyque perfumes gender-free?
Diptyque develops an artistic approach to perfume, extended through words and drawings. Freed from any notion of gender, each fragrance invites everyone to choose the one that resonates with their memory, emotions, and imagination.
What is the shelf life of a perfume once opened?
The shelf life of a perfume depends on several factors. Composed of alcohol, it can be preserved for many years if protected from light and temperature variations. A slight change in color may occur over time, without affecting the olfactory quality of the perfume.
Can I recycle a Diptyque perfume bottle or bring it back to the store?
The glass bottle and cardboard case are recyclable. You can place them in the dedicated recycling bins or bring them back to one of our participating stores.
If the fragrance is eligible, our advisors may offer to refill your bottle, subject to availability.
We invite you to check which stores offer this service via our “Find your store” section.

Heritage
What are the House codes?
Each code embodies a part of a heritage that has been written over decades and shapes our language.
- The oval: A symbol of art and history, a sensitive frame that borders the freedom of creation. An emblem affixed to candles, perfumes and decorative objects.
- The scent burner: At the heart of the oval, it evokes rituals of the past, releases swirls and asserts the craft of perfumer-storytellers.
- The dancing letters: Playful calligrams where the name becomes a drawing; visual enigmas inspired by the fragrances, a nod to Desmond Knox-Leet's past as a cryptologist.
- The drawing: Each fragrance has its own landscape, each landscape its own fragrance. Always created in tandem, the drawings reflect the uniqueness of the House, inherited from the founders who illustrated their memories and sensations through panoramic illustrations.
- The black & white and the colours: The deep black of the ink, vibrant in the dancing letters, meets the immaculate white of the canvas that welcomes the artist. Together, they converse in a subtle interplay of contrasts, of fullness and emptiness.
- The “O”: A visual and sound leitmotif, it echoes each Eau, symbolises both the first Diptyque eau de toilette and the shape of the oval. This letter is found in all the names of the House's perfumes.
To find out more about the meaning of these codes and their stories, continue reading here.
Diptyque Maisons
What is "La MaisonDiptyque” ?
A unique place halfway between a boutique and a cultural space, imagined as the apartment of a Parisian aesthete. These locations, in Paris, 7 rue Duphot (1st) and in London, 107 New Bond Street, are the largest ever opened by the Maison, with over 400 m² dedicated to exploring its universe.
Artisanal craftsmanship holds a central place here. From the gilded ceiling created by Claire Coles to the mosaics by Pierre Mesguich, from the Chinese ink frescoes by Alexandre Poulaillon to the botanical ironwork by the Robert & Robert workshop, from the colorful mosaics by Florence Berthet Sonsino to the stained glass by Studio Bianconi...every architectural detail celebrates exceptional craftsmanship.
This dialogue between gestures and materials is in line with the spirit of the three founders, artists and decorators, who made the first boutique on boulevard Saint-Germain a place for meetings and artisanal discoveries.
The Maisons Diptyque bring together the Maison’s iconic creations, as well as exclusive services and pieces, as well as an artistic and cultural program composed of exhibitions, workshops, meetings and events.
What is the Espace Éphémère?
The Espace Éphémère is a place dedicated to art and creation, reflecting the deep connection Diptyque has had with the artistic world since its beginnings. Throughout the year, this space hosts a changing program of exhibitions, artistic experiences, and encounters.
